SMELT 2010
SMELT 2010 took place in the National Heritage Park, Ferrycarrig, Co. Wexford. It was an attempt, for the first time since the 1950s, to smelt Irish bog ore in a furnace based on Irish archaeological evidence.

The project focused on the smelt itself (detailed in the documentary above) but the project also included the experimental production of oak and peat charcoal in conjunction with Niall Kenny (see the charcoal blog) as well as prospection for bog ore and some flint knapping by Emmett O'Keeffe.

This site is in the process of being updated with the results of the project but in the meantime you can read some blog posts over on Seandálaíocht
